No Bugs, No Trout

What makes fly fishing so special?

Unlike conventional fishing, fly fishing relies on ‘matching the hatch’, or imitating insects with artificial flies that match what trout are selectively feeding on. A strong understanding of aquatic entomology can go a long way in increasing your success as an angler.

Unfortunately, aquatic insects are declining worldwide. The Salmonfly Project is helping save our hatches through research and monitoring efforts, angler education, and improved management practices.

Meet the 'Big 3'

These three groups of insects are the most important for fly fishing. They are also very sensitive to environmental change. Entomologists refer to this group of aquatic insects as ‘EPT’. The proportion of a stream’s invertebrate community represented by EPT is directly correlated with its health.
