This quarter\, we’re inviting aquatic entomologist Rick Hafele to share his insect expertise and how anglers can level up their bug knowledge in order to “match the hatch.” Registration for this event is FREE\, but Salmonfly Project members will automatically be enrolled in a raffle to win a Patagonia Black Hole Duffel Bag (40 L). \nSpace is limited! Be sure to register to claim your spot! \nThe Salmonfly Project Quarterly Webinar \nwith Rick Hafele \nThursday\, June 25th \n6:30–8:00 PM MDT \nRick Hafele has a Master’s degree in aquatic entomology and a minor in fisheries biology\, and has worked as a professional aquatic biologist for over 40 years. The majority of his professional life was spent working for the Oregon Dept of Environmental Quality as an aquatic biologist. While there\, he helped develop sampling protocols and assessment methods for aquatic invertebrates\, was the lead author of Oregon’s Biocriteria standard\, and managed the bioassessment and statewide water monitoring programs. In addition\, Rick has been passionate about fly fishing and passing on information about aquatic invertebrates to anglers. Books to his credit include The Complete Book of Western Hatches (with Dave Hughes\, Amato Pub\, 1981)\, An Angler’s Guide to Aquatic Insects and Their Imitations (with Scott Roederer\, Johnson Books\, 1995)\, Western Mayfly Hatches (with Dave Hughes\, Amato Pub\, 2005)\, Nymph Fishing Rivers and Streams (Stackpole Books\, 2006)\, and most recently the two volume set Tactics for Trout and Seasons for Trout (Stackpole Books\, 2014) co-authored with Dave Hughes and Skip Morris.  In addition\, Rick is well known for instructional DVDs that include the 1983 classic Anatomy of a Trout Stream and\, more recently\, the four-volume set titled Fly Fishing Large Western Rivers\, plus Nymph Fishing Basics\, Advanced Nymph Fishing\, and Advanced Tactics for Emergers & Dries. DESCRIPTION:Bug Fest \nFly Angler’s Entomology Education Event \nHosted by The Salmonfly Project \nAt Three Dollar Bridge\, Madison River\, MT \nJul 25\, 2026 \nAwareness of aquatic insect hatches\, identification\, and ecology has declined as modern fly fishing trends shift away from “matching the hatch.” At the same time\, aquatic insects across the Rocky Mountain West are in measurable decline—threatening the trout populations\, fisheries\, and economies that depend on them. Bug Fest is designed to address this issue by reconnecting the angling public with the foundation of our sport – the bugs. In this hands-on event\, participants will learn from professional entomologists from The Salmonfly Project about the aquatic insects that sustain the world-class Madison River. Learning will focus on basic insect identification and on the differences in life stages and behaviors among major hatches. Ultimately\, the event aims to help participants to become better anglers and stewards of their local waters.  \nEvent Activities: \nBug Fest will have four major educational activities\, each focusing on a different aspect of the insect life cycle. Activities will run simultaneously and repeatedly for approximately 45 minutes each throughout the event\, allowing participants to choose the duration and focus of their learning experience. Activities will include: \n  \n\nNymph Station: Participants will collect\, sort\, and identify aquatic insect nymphs while learning about their ecology\, emergence timing\, and behaviors that make them accessible to trout. \nDrifter/Emerger Station: Participants will sample drifting nymphs and those in mid-emergence\, and how drift and emergence influence trout feeding behavior.\nAdult Station: Participants will collect and identify adult insects and learn to read river clues to better select fly patterns and effectively match the hatch.\nFly Tying Clinics: Local fishing and fly-tying legends like Craig Mathews\, Rick Wollum\, and Kelly Galloup will tie hatch-specific patterns to help inform anglers’ fly selection.\n\nPartner Participation: \nBrands and businesses are invited to attend the event to show commitment and solidarity toward aquatic insect conservation and education. While product display and tabling are not encouraged at Bug Fest\, brands may showcase select items that are relevant to ‘matching the hatch’.  \n
