  • Renee Faltings

    BOARD MEMBER, TREASURER

Born and raised in Madras, Oregon; Renee's first love of rivers was the Deschutes. She learned to fly fish, raft whitewater, and chase snakes at an early age. After college, Central Oregon called her back where she spent many years in Sisters and Bend, Oregon. Her move to Ketchum, Idaho, in 2009 introduced her to many new freestone rivers and spring creeks, which required a new level of "bug" knowledge.

Renee met Jackson Birrell while volunteering with the Blackfoot Challenge, helping collect aquatic insect samples from the Blackfoot River. After a few days of volunteering she realized the Salmonfly Project was doing work that no other conservation group was. Living in Ovando, Montana, next to some of the best waters in the West and seeing changing conditions, she wanted to become more involved.

Renee is very involved with Trout Unlimited and is a board member of the Coldwater Conservation Fund. She is a conservation warrior for bugs, water, fish, and the natural world - and very proud to be involved with SFP.

  • Maggie Heumann

    BOARD MEMBER

Maggie was born and raised in the Appalachian foothills of North Alabama and was drawn to the outdoors from as far back as she can remember. Growing up on a farm with a big lake, she discovered her passion for insects, fishing, and the natural world at an early age. She holds an Undergraduate Degree in Poultry Science from Auburn University and a Master’s in Entomology from the University of Nebraska. After a post-college stint working in a fly shop, Maggie became the manager of Orvis Jackson Hole and now serves as Trout Unlimited’s Director of Engagement Partnerships.

She is an active member and supporter of her local TU chapters and conservation organizations, providing entomology education for folks around the region. She is a co-founder of Artemis Sportswomen and serves on their advisory council. When she’s not working or volunteering, Maggie loves spending time on the water catching bugs & fish or exploring the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem—her backyard—with her husband, Hunter, their two daughters, Cricket and Pen, and their four dogs, Bug, Missy, Bee, and Diffie.

  • Kyle Toyama

    BOARD MEMBER

Kyle began his journey tying flies and casting fly rods at the age of 9 and developed his knowledge and skills on ponds, lakes, and some classic waters on the East Coast before moving west, where he was introduced to sight fishing as well as the challenging dry fly opportunities afforded by spring creeks like the Henry’s Fork and Silver Creek and their well-known hatches, chasing these hatches now takes up much of his attention in the summer months. It is this inclination towards engaging with trout during these short-lived hatches that connected Kyle with the Salmonfly Project. Kyle has also been fortunate to travel and fish in a number of destinations like Iceland, the Bahamas, Mexico, Belize, New Zealand, and Japan. When not on the water, Kyle enjoys camping, cooking, Chicago Cubs baseball, and following his bird dog Hachi all around the west.

  • Brenna Shea

    BOARD MEMBER

Brenna is a Western Washington transplant who moved to Missoula in 2013. Growing up in a rural part of the Pacific Northwest fostered a lifetime love and fascination of the natural world and led to many outdoor pursuits as an adult. After finishing her stint with the Montana Conservation Corps, Brenna decided to (finally) finish the bachelor's degree she started nearly ten years prior, where she met James and Jackson while working for retired entomology professor Art Woods. She graduated from UM with a Bachelor of Science in biology, with a concentration in organismal biology and ecology. Brenna joined the Salmonfly Project board in early 2025 and continues to explore her interest in arthropods through her work at the Missoula Butterfly House and Insectarium, where she is employed as a science communicator and educator. When she’s not wrangling bugs, Brenna spends her time working on a myriad of unfinished art projects, cozying up to a good horror flick, or exploring outside with her absolute nut of a cattle dog, Rocko.
