Teton River Aquatic Insect Monitoring
Come volunteer with us to survey aquatic insects from the Teton River!
We’re gearing up for our fourth season of aquatic insect monitoring on the Teton River, in collaboration with Teton Valley Trout Unlimited. This season, we’ll be surveying aquatic insects at seven sites within Teton Canyon. This project is urgently important, given the recent propositions to rebuild Teton Dam, which would flood the Canyon and degrade habitat for cutthroat trout and the insects they rely on for food. Results from this study will establish the first-ever baseline for aquatic insects within Teton Canyon and will help guide management decisions regarding potential dam infrastructure.
When: September 14th to 17th from 9am-5pm
No previous scientific experience is required to volunteer – only the ability to wade confidently in knee-deep water while carrying nets and supplies. Volunteers will help SFP staff sample aquatic insects, while learning about aquatic insect ecology and identification. A minimum of 4 hours is required to allow sufficient time for training, but volunteers are asked to stay for an entire 8-hour day, if possible.
